Claude Code error 429 and 529 overloaded / 5xx: why and what to do
Errors 429 (too many requests), 529 overloaded and 5xx with RocketKey: causes, how Claude Code retries, and when to contact support.
Updated 20 Oct 2026
429 Too Many Requests
- Cause
- Your plan's requests-per-minute (rpm) limit was exceeded, usually by running many agents or windows at once.
- Fix
- Run fewer sessions in parallel, wait a few seconds and retry. If you hit the limit often, consider a plan with a higher rpm.
529 Overloaded
- Cause
- The model provider is temporarily overloaded; this is not a problem with your key or plan.
- Fix
- Wait a moment and retry, or switch to another model. Claude Code retries a few times before showing the error.
500, 502, 503 (5xx)
- Cause
- A temporary error at RocketKey or the model provider.
- Fix
- Retry in a few minutes. Check the Status page; if it persists, contact support with the time and the model you used.
What if it lasts?
Check the Status page. A day with 4 or more hours of accumulated outage adds +1 day to every running plan period, under the refund policy.
